How might literature, history, and other humanities be used to educate and engage the general public in the science of the environmental crisis? Keith Alexander, Ph.D., of Shepherd University's History Department, will discuss plans for a new biennial symposium, Humanities in the 21st Century, on which Shepherd and the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) are collaborating. The initial two-day session later this week, titled Humanities and the Environment, will bring together writers, historians, filmmakers, and scientists to discuss the role of the humanities in educating general audiences about our environmental challenges. By focusing on the ways in which hard science can be communicated in cultural, societal, and artistic terms, Alexander and others express hope that public engagement with these issues can be achieved. The symposium at NCTC is free and open to the public, but registration is required www.shepherd.edu/humanities . All keynote sessions will be streamed on Facebook Live .
